TRAKAI. On a shoestring
Have a local train ride
The Castle on a lake
Meet the Karaite people and culture
Eat kibinas their local empanada
Enjoy lake views
This is not a regular pickup service. This is punk way to reach Trakai – we meet at the train station and have a daytrip like locals do. Trakai is a historic picturesque place with a castle in a middle of the lake. Expect nature and escape to it. See the castle, lakes and on your free time have a picnic by the castle eating a local authentic “kibinas” made by local Karaites.
You will enjoy a short ride by a new train to Trakai and this will provide your eyes and cameras with more views on the way there and back.
Once in Trakai take a walk along the lakes and to the old town and hear the stories about the dukes who almost became Kings. You will hear some history, but not too much. Overall this will be more like the locals do – a daytrip to Trakai.
The Old town of Trakai was shaped by Karaites – a local ethnic group from Crimean peninsula which has been living here since XIV c. - hear their story and try their local food “Kibinas” - dough stuffed with meat or something else.
The Castle. It is the most famous castle in Lithuania. It is 14th century Gothic and lies on an island. Reach it by crossing a few bridges and get inside. Have a picnic on the island afterwards, or use the free time to further enjoy the views and take the snapshots of beautiful lakes – You will be able to rent a rowboat or just sit by the lake.
